When the cup is shown at her feet, she is wearing socks
Synopsis
After witnessing a bizarre and traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced that she is being threatened by a mysterious entity. A few days before the September 30, 2022 release, actors from the film appeared at several baseball games, sitting motionless and smiling behind the plate while looking into the camera, motionless despite fans in the audience being understandably concerned while wearing the image’s t-shirts smiling. During the Today show, another logo appeared in the background next to the crowd. At about the 31-minute mark, Rose breaks a glass when her alarm goes off. A few seconds later, when she checks the door, she is wearing lace-up shoes.
You’re Not Real!
Based on what happens later at a party, there are several continuity issues that may not be “mistakes” but may show intentional “breaks” in Rose’s consciousness/sanity. Rose Cotter: This isn’t real! The Monstrosity: Your Mind Makes It Real! Paramount’s opening and closing logos have a curved smile-shaped line at the base of the mountain. Featured in Chris Stuckmann Movie Reviews: Smile (2022).
I was wrong
Lollipop, written by Beverley Ross and Julius Dixon, performed by The Chordettes. One of the few horror movies that managed to surprise me this year. When the trailer came out, I thought it was going to be another stupid, incompetent mess. From the start, everything from the direction to the performances to the camera work and sound design was absolutely stunning. How a low budget could accomplish this feat was beyond me, but the film was simply fascinating to watch.
Smile handled it decently, but don’t expect an Oscar-worthy portrayal
The horror was quite effective with scares and horrific moments, albeit some cheap, but not that distracting. They were able to build the tension so well and didn’t plan on letting it let up until the end. The plot was simple enough to connect all the relevant characters in a way that made me care about them, even though some might complain that 90% of the characters were just filler, and I could agree with that. However, the protagonist was good enough to carry the entire show. One thing that might not sit well with many viewers is the use of mental illness.
Give it a try
And no, it wasn’t exactly the main theme, so try not to give up halfway through because there would be surprises in the final act of the film. I would say it was worth it for horror fans like me. It wasn’t just a couple of Annabelle or Supernatural sequels, but something more.
